Do you know where our surname comes from? I study linguistics and I have found that "Strohsahl" is a name of an ancient profession. There was probably a man who made ropes of straw on a farm (Strohis german for straw, and sahl was Seil, german for rope). It is only a theory, but it is - on my opinion - the most evident theory...

The origin of our family and where most of them are living is a tiny area in lower Saxony, before named Hanover. Most of family members were farmers. In the very old days our family name was spelled STROSADEL, later changed to Strohsahl, and my tribe lost by mistake of register office the last h,thus Strohsal only, others lost the 1st h (Strosahl) in the family name.

The Strohsahl Family on the Island of Neuwerk 1761-1913 is a very interesting story so please read it.

My great great grandfather, Jurgen Hinrich Strohsahl, was a blacksmith, having owned and operated his own shop in Mulsum, Germany. He may very well have had such a shop in Wremen, Germany, because we know he lived in Wremen before moving up the coast to Mulsum-Wierde. Jurgen was born in Stickenbuttel, which is now known as Cuxhaven,a seacoast city on the North Sea, about twenty miles due north of Bremerhaven.

Anna Louise Schmidt was Jurgen wife and she bore him four children; they were August Juhan, the first born, Rebecka Fredericke (their only daughter), Hinrich Frederick, and the last born, Ferdinand August, my Great grandfather.
Ferdinand and Hinrich came to America about 1869.
Ferdinand August Strohsahl was born June 5, 1851-Died January 17, 1927.
